Summer Semester 2020

Term: two semesters

The aim of the second part of the M-project "New forms of housing in Euskirchen and Kall" is to present the municipality of Kall and the city of Euskirchen with designs for innovative, resilient and sustainable housing for both plots. The focus here is not on theme-related design, but on a holistic, systemic view of all events and conditions.

This is achieved by precisely elaborating the characteristics of interior and exterior, private and public, path and place. The transition and demarcation of the diverging spaces are considered above all. In order to optimise housing construction, attention is paid, among other things, to good lighting and the reduction of sources of disturbance, a strengthening of the urban design, fluid internal and external development, the choice of the appropriate type of housing and the needs of the target group.

The design is processed on the basis of the previously prepared outline plan on a scale of 1:200 and is subject to constant review. The focus here is on model work and the presentation in floor plan and section. The final result is a differentiated design of open space and interior and the transition areas.

An exhibition of the results in Euskirchen is organized by the city of Euskirchen. The final critique or presentation of the designs will be part of the opening of the exhibition.

In the project "Sustainable forms of housing in the district of Euskirchen" two areas are to be given a new, sustainable and innovative residential use. The aim is to increase the attractiveness of both locations by developing and elaborating solutions and innovations for contemporary living.

The following two design areas are available for selection:

1. Kall, a community in the northern Eifel, located between Monschau and Bad Münstereifel, currently has about 11,500 inhabitants with a slightly decreasing tendency. As a small town in the rural area, it faces - as many other towns - urban planning challenges, which result from the relocation of trade to the surrounding industrial areas as well as from the migration of the young population. To the south of the station there is an area on both sides of the town entrance road with a size of approx. 37,500 squaremeter, which has been largely used for commercial purposes or left fallow. The development of the area has to react to the adjacent railway tracks and the busy road and benefits from the proximity of the station, the city centre and the neighbouring swimming pool. The adjoining areas may be included in the planning. An action concept was developed in 2017 on behalf of the municipality of Kall, which already provides for a new residential development in this area. For this purpose, a climate protection housing estate was developed in a first test draft.

2. Euskirchen, a medium-sized town in the northern Eifel, west of Bonn, currently has a population of approx. 58,000. Close to the city centre is the area of the fire station, which with a size of approx. 4800 squaremeters offers a great potential for the inner development of Euskirchen. An unconventional plot layout and the special neighbourhood, the municipal fire station, are the challenges for the design of a residential development.
